Upper Alders

The woodland around Upper Alders is proper woodland - the sort where you actually feel like you've left suburbia behind, even though you're barely half an hour from Henlow. Ancient oaks tower above, and in spring the ground cover is thick with bluebells that honestly stop you in your tracks. It's not a manicured nature reserve with visitor centres and marked trails; this is a working forest where you can just wander and let your legs take you wherever feels right.

Walkers will get the most from it. If you've got kids, give them a decent pair of boots first - the paths are muddy as anything after rain, and there's enough undergrowth to make smaller children feel like they're on an actual adventure rather than a theme park walk. You'll need a couple of hours minimum to feel like you've explored it properly. There's no entrance fee that we could find, and no facilities to speak of, so bring what you need.

It works well as a break between visits to Henlow Bridge Lakes, the nearby holiday park four miles away. That's more about water activities and structured family fun, whereas Upper Alders is the opposite - it's trees, silence, and the occasional rustling you can't quite identify. Go early on a weekend if you want solitude. By mid-morning in summer it gets busier with dog walkers and joggers, which isn't a bad thing, just different.
