Vann Lake Nature Reserve

Water, woodland, and the sort of quiet that Surrey doesn't often deliver - that's what Vann Lake offers. It's a proper nature reserve, the kind where you're more likely to spot a kingfisher than another human, which counts for something these days.

The lake itself is the main draw. Walking the perimeter takes you through mixed woodland, past reed beds where warblers nest in spring, and gives decent views across the water without feeling staged or over-managed. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the reserve is known for them. Walkers will appreciate the flat, easy terrain, though the paths can get muddy after rain, so proper boots are worth the bother.

This isn't a place for a quick twenty-minute visit. Allow a good hour and a half if you're taking your time, longer if you're serious about wildlife spotting or photography. Families with young kids will get something out of it - pond dipping in summer, spotting wildlife - but restless toddlers might start complaining before you've done a full lap. Teenagers who are into nature or photography will find it genuinely interesting.

The location works well for a Surrey Hills break. Dorking's just down the road, and you're well-placed for exploring Box Hill or Leith Hill if you fancy something more dramatic. Several glamping and camping spots operate nearby - The Green Escape and Henfold Lakes are within easy reach - making this a sensible add-on to a longer holiday in the area rather than a destination in itself.
