Venn Plantation

A proper walk through tall conifers, Venn Plantation sits just outside Crediton and gives you that satisfying forest-in-the-middle-of-nowhere feeling without actually having to trek far. The trees are dense enough that you lose sight of the surrounding farmland quickly, which is rather the point. It's flat enough for families with younger kids, and the paths are well-trodden so you won't spend half your time working out where to go. Allow an hour for a decent circuit, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type who stops to photograph things.

Walkers will find it a useful addition to a wider exploration of the Crediton area. The plantation itself won't hold your attention for an entire day trip, but as part of a morning's outing before heading to Yeatheridge Farm Caravan Park for lunch, it works well. The air smells properly like pine, especially after rain, and there's something quite restful about being surrounded by that much green. It's the sort of place that's genuinely pleasant without being Instagram-famous.

Historically, these conifer plantations were planted in the postwar period for timber production, so there's nothing ancient or wild about it - this is managed woodland, not primeval forest. That said, the trees are now old enough that they create real atmosphere. Worth adding to your itinerary if you're staying nearby and fancy a morning among the conifers, but don't expect dramatic vistas or rare wildlife.
