Verne Redoubt

The Victorian defensive fortification sits on high ground overlooking Weymouth, a squat stone structure that speaks to 19th-century fears of French invasion. Built in the 1860s as part of a chain of coastal defences, Verne Redoubt is basically a heavily armoured artillery fort - all thick walls, gun emplacements, and the sort of military engineering that looks far more impressive from the outside than it feels inside.

What you get is a walk around the perimeter and through the gun positions, which takes a solid hour if you're not rushing. The views across Weymouth Bay are genuinely good, though the fort itself feels less dramatic than some of its siblings along the Dorset coast. The stonework's held up reasonably well, and there's something rather satisfying about imagining the garrison drilling here 160 years ago, convinced the French were about to land.

History buffs will find it worthwhile; families with young kids might struggle unless they're seriously into Victoriana. It's absolutely free and accessible, which helps - no faff with tickets or opening hours nonsense. Best to go when the light's clear enough to see across the water properly, and leave enough time for a proper potter around Weymouth itself afterwards.

If you're camping at Chesil Beach Lodge Park or staying at Haven Littlesea, it's barely twenty minutes' drive from either. Works well as part of a Dorset coast swing, though I'd couple it with a proper coastal walk rather than treating it as a destination in itself.
