Victoria Park

The coast near Deal has a proper gem in Victoria Park, a nature reserve that's quietly impressive without any of the fuss you'd expect from something this close to town. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - rare enough these days. The reserve protects a stretch of chalk grassland and scrubby woodland, home to butterflies, birds, and wildflowers that genuinely take your breath away in late spring. Walking the trails here feels like a proper escape, even though you're minutes from Deal's seafront.

This is squarely one for nature lovers and walkers. Birdwatchers will spend hours with binoculars; kids might find it a bit too quiet unless they're the type who like spotting insects and pressing flowers. Allow a couple of hours to do it justice without rushing. Admission appears to be free, which is refreshing, and there's no daft entrance fee nonsense.

If you're based at one of the nearby sites - Kingsdown Camping or Dunn Street Farm are within easy driving distance - Victoria Park makes a brilliant half-day stop between beach time and evening meals. It's genuinely worth the detour if you're already in the area, though perhaps not worth travelling from far afield on its own. The grassland walking is steady going, nothing strenuous, so it suits families with younger kids too. Just go when the weather's halfway decent; wet chalk gets slippery fast.
