Wadebridge and District Museum

The museum sits right in Wadebridge itself, a small market town on the River Camel that doesn't shout about its attractions. Inside you'll find the usual local history fare - bits of Roman pottery, farming implements, old photographs showing how the town looked decades ago, that sort of thing. It's the kind of place where you learn that Wadebridge was once a proper industrial hub, with slate quarrying and river trade keeping things moving.

This is really one for the history buffs and locals wanting to understand the area's bones. Kids might manage twenty minutes, an hour at a push if you're patient. The admission is free or costs very little - standard museum rates - and it won't eat up a whole afternoon, which is either a blessing or a curse depending on how you feel about earnest local museums.

The real value is as a rainy-day filler between beach days if you're staying at one of the parks nearby - The Laurels or St Minver are both walkable from town. Wadebridge itself is lovely for a wander: proper little independent shops, decent pubs, and it's only twenty minutes from Padstow's foodie chaos if you fancy a change of pace. If you're doing a proper circuit of the North Cornish coast, the museum provides useful context for understanding what you're seeing in the landscape around you. Just don't expect it to be the highlight of the trip.
