Wakerley Great Wood

The woodland around Wakerley Great Wood feels properly ancient - gnarled oaks and beech trees that have stood for centuries, their roots gripping the Northamptonshire clay. You're just outside Corby here, in what remains of the old Rockingham Forest, and walking these paths is like moving through England's past, though nowadays it's gloriously quiet.

What you get is straightforward: a decent woodland walk with good footpaths, woodland birds if you're lucky, and enough shade to make summer bearable. Spring brings bluebells across the forest floor. The paths are well-maintained and navigable for families with older kids, though buggies would struggle in places. Allow two to three hours if you want to properly explore without rushing.

This works brilliantly as part of a wider Rockingham Forest Park base - you're only 5.3 miles from Landal's holiday park, or under two miles from New Lodge Farm at Bulwick if you're staying thereabouts. The forest itself is free to access, no gates, no nonsense. Coming early morning or late afternoon is wise if you want solitude - midday can draw the occasional crowd from Corby.

Historically minded visitors will get more out of it knowing this was medieval hunting forest, though there's little interpretation on site. It's not spectacular in the way some ancient woodlands are, but it rewards you for showing up. Kids will enjoy spotting wildlife and running ahead on the paths; it's the kind of place where a morning ramble feels properly restorative rather than an exhausting tourist tick-box.
