Walden Castle

The motte-and-bailey earthworks near Saffron Walden are properly impressive when you're standing at the top, looking out over the Essex countryside. Walden Castle isn't a dramatic stone fortress - it's ancient defensive earthwork, the kind that makes sense once you realise Normans built these things to rule newly conquered land quickly.

You're looking at a substantial raised mound with a ditch running around it, dating back to the 11th century. The scale catches you off guard. It takes a decent climb to reach the top, but the views across the rural landscape remind you why the Normans chose this spot. On a clear day you can see quite far across Essex.

Walkers will get more from this than casual visitors. It's the sort of place that rewards you for bothering to clamber up rather than just peering from the base. History enthusiasts will appreciate standing on actual Norman-era defences, though there's nothing much to see up close - it's the earthwork itself that tells the story. Kids might lose interest after twenty minutes unless they're keen on climbing and exploring.

If you're staying at Hidden Gem Glamping or Pightle Farm Campsite nearby, it's worth an afternoon visit while you're exploring the Saffron Walden area. The town itself has decent shops and a proper Tudor high street if you need more to do. Allow an hour including the walk up and time to take in the views. Best on a dry day - it gets muddy after rain.
