Walder's Wood

A thick canopy of oak and beech trees makes Walder's Wood feel properly remote, even though you're only a few miles from Horsham. The paths wind through deciduous forest that's genuinely peaceful - the kind of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of traffic. It's a working woodland, so you get a sense that it's been managed for centuries rather than just left to do its own thing.

The forest is best for anyone who wants a straightforward woodland walk without the crowds. Families with younger kids will manage fine on the main paths, though buggies become a nightmare once you venture deeper. Serious walkers can lose a good two hours here without trying, and it's genuinely good for spotting birds and deer if you're patient. History types might appreciate the old coppice management marks on the trees, though there aren't information boards explaining it.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities to speak of - you just turn up and walk. Bring proper boots in winter because the ground gets boggy. Spring and early autumn are lovely - fewer insects, better light, and the forest doesn't feel claustrophobic.

If you're staying at Raylands Country Park just down the road, Walder's Wood works well as a morning outing before heading to Knepp Wildland Safaris for something more structured. The two give you different flavours of Sussex nature. It's not dramatic or showy, but it's genuine woodland, which counts for something.
