Down a modest high street in Coldstream sits one of those places that stops you in your tracks if you've got even a passing interest in military history. Walk This Way Army Surplus is part shop, part museum - and honestly, it's rather difficult to know where one ends and the other begins.

You're walking into boxes of uniform buttons, original medals still in their cases, rifle parts, helmets from every era you can think of, and countless other bits of kit that tell stories. Some items are for sale if you fancy taking home a genuine piece of military heritage. Others are just there because the owner clearly couldn't bear to part with them. It's gloriously chaotic in the best possible way.

History enthusiasts will lose themselves for hours. Kids with any interest in uniforms or weapons will find it genuinely absorbing - far more engaging than a traditional museum because you can get up close to everything. Adults who collect anything military-related will see it as essential shopping.

There's no formal entry fee that I'm aware of, and you can spend anywhere from twenty minutes to a couple of hours depending on your enthusiasm. Coldstream itself is a pleasant enough town for a wander, and if you're staying at Coldstream Holiday Park just up the road, it's barely worth firing up the car. Worth the detour if you're exploring the Scottish Borders properly.
