Walkeringham Nature Reserve

The reserve sits on the Nottinghamshire-Lincolnshire border near Doncaster, and it's the sort of place that creeps up on you. What looks like ordinary countryside from the road opens into something properly special once you're inside - a patchwork of wet grassland, reedbed, and open water that draws in serious numbers of birds. Expect to spend two to three hours here if you're actually looking, less if you just fancy a quick walk and some fresh air.

Birdwatchers will have a field day. The reedbed particularly attracts warblers in summer, and winter brings in wildfowl you won't see much elsewhere. Families with binoculars and a bit of patience will find it absorbing; small children might get restless unless they're already keen on spotting things. The paths are straightforward enough, nothing too demanding.

You're free to wander - there's no charge and no fixed opening hours that I can find, which means you can rock up when it suits you. Early morning is your best bet for seeing anything, honestly. The light's better, and the birds haven't been spooked yet.

It pairs well with a holiday at Waterfront Country Park or Misterton Holiday Park, both within easy reach. Neither is far, so you could do this as a morning outing before heading back to your caravan. The reserve itself is more about what you bring to it than what it offers you - bring binoculars and patience, and you'll get something worthwhile. Go empty-handed and expecting entertainment, and you might find it a bit thin.
