Walled Garden

The walled garden near Beverley is one of those places that rewards a slow walk rather than a quick look-round. Victorian walls enclose a proper working garden where you'll see everything from vegetable plots to trained fruit trees and rows of perennials that look like something from a garden centre before anyone invented garden centres. It's refreshingly unpretentious - no twee gift shop, no Instagram backdrops. Just plants and space and the occasional smell of warm brick.

Walkers and serious gardeners get the most from this. If you're the sort who stops to read plant labels and thinks about why a wall-trained pear is actually quite clever, you'll spend a solid hour here contentedly. Families with restless kids might find it a bit slow unless you've got littles who enjoy digging about and spotting insects. The beds change with the seasons, so it's worth timing it right - late spring and summer are obviously peak, but autumn has its own rewards.

Combined with a base at Cherry Burton Leisure Park just down the road, this makes for a decent half-day out alongside exploring Beverley itself - the minster there is genuinely exceptional. The walled garden works best as part of a broader wander rather than a destination in itself, but if you're local or passing through, it's well worth the detour. Bring decent shoes for gravel paths and allow yourself time to actually look at things rather than rush through.
