Walsingham Abbey

The ruins of Walsingham Abbey sit quietly in the Norfolk countryside east of Fakenham, a place that once drew pilgrims from across Europe. What remains are the skeletal arches and broken walls of a medieval monastery - enough to paint a picture of something grand, but not so much that you're overwhelmed by the scale of it all.

It's a walk-around attraction, essentially free, and you can cover the main bits in 30 minutes or so. The stonework is genuinely striking if you're into medieval architecture. The setting matters more than the ruins themselves - flat Norfolk fields, sky everywhere, the kind of quiet that makes you actually think.

History buffs will find it worthwhile. Families with younger kids might lose them after 15 minutes unless they're the sort who like climbing on old stones (which they are, let's be honest). Walkers benefit most - you can combine it with the wider Walsingham pilgrimage route if you're feeling pious.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - North Norfolk Glamping, Old Brick Kilns, or Pinewoods - it's a straightforward half-hour drive. Not a headline attraction, but the kind of place that adds texture to a Norfolk holiday. Go midweek if you can, when the car park isn't rammed with day-trippers. Bring decent shoes. The ground can be boggy, and there's proper wind that sweeps across with no shelter at all.
