Walthamstow Wetlands, London Wildlife Trust

The moment you step onto the reserve's boardwalks, the city noise drops away. Walthamstow Wetlands isn't some distant nature reserve - it's right on London's doorstep, yet feels properly remote. The London Wildlife Trust runs this place, and it shows. Former reservoirs have been rewilded into something genuinely wild, with reed beds stretching as far as you can see and water that actually hosts serious birdlife.

You're looking at nine reservoirs in total, all connected by walkways. Bring binoculars if you've got them - herons, egrets, kingfishers, and in winter, visiting ducks from the Arctic. The main circuit takes about two hours at a leisurely pace, though you can do bits of it in thirty minutes if you're short on time. Admission is free, which feels like a steal.

Families with kids under ten might find it a bit slow - there's no playground energy here, and little legs get restless on long boardwalks. But older kids who can spot a bird and actually care will be absorbed. Serious twitchers treat it like a second home. Walkers get a genuine sense of escape without travelling far.

It's perfectly placed if you're based at Lee Valley Campsite or Lee Valley Camping and Caravan Park nearby. Combine it with a walk along the Lea Valley itself, and you've got a solid half-day out. Spring and autumn are best - fewer midges, clearer skies for spotting.
