Wardley Wood

Walking into Wardley Wood feels like stepping back a few centuries. The trees are old - genuinely old - and the paths wind through the kind of mature woodland you don't stumble upon very often in the Midlands. It's the sort of place where you half-expect to bump into someone in Tudor dress, though thankfully you won't.

There's not much in the way of signage or facilities, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on your mood. No cafe, no visitor centre, no gift shop trying to sell you a woodland-themed tea towel. Just woodland, paths, and the occasional muddy bit that catches you off guard. Bring sensible shoes.

Historically-minded types will appreciate what they're looking at - this is proper old England, the kind of wood that's been here for centuries. It works well for a decent walk, though it's not massive, so don't expect to lose yourself for six hours. An hour or so does it justice. Families with young kids will manage fine on the main paths, though toddlers might find it a slog in places.

It slots nicely into a wider exploration of the Market Harborough area. If you're staying at Rural Relaxing or Emily's Cut Camping - both solid choices within easy driving distance - this makes a good half-morning detour. Pair it with a proper look around Market Harborough town itself, which has genuine character and isn't crowded with day-trippers. Free to visit, naturally. Go on a quiet weekday if you can. The wood's better for it.
