Wardown House, Museum and Gallery

The red-brick Victorian villa sits back from the road in Dunstable like someone's slightly eccentric aunt - the sort of place you'd walk past a dozen times before realising what you're looking at. Wardown House is a proper local museum, the kind where you'll find genuinely interesting stuff rather than endless interactive screens trying to sell you on history you didn't ask for.

Inside, the rooms are laid out as they might have been when the house was actually lived in, which means you get a real sense of domestic life in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The collections span everything from local archaeology to crafts and decorative arts - pottery, glass, furniture - all with that satisfying depth that comes from decades of people actually caring about their town's past rather than just ticking boxes.

It's brilliant for anyone who likes houses and social history without the crowds you'd get at the big estates. Kids can be a bit restless unless they're genuinely interested in museums, but it's intimate enough that you won't feel harassed if they fidget. Allow a couple of hours; less if you're just dipping in.

If you're camping at Merlin Farm near Whipsnade Zoo - just five miles away - this makes an easy rainy afternoon detour. It's free entry, which doesn't hurt either. Dunstable itself is small and manageable, so park up, spend an hour or so wandering the rooms, then head back to the Hills for a proper walk.
