Warton Crag Rocking stones

The rocking stones atop Warton Crag are proper geological oddities - massive boulders balanced so precariously on the limestone that you can actually shift them with a good shove. It's not much of a detour from Carnforth, and the walk itself is straightforward enough, taking you up through farmland and bracken to roughly 250 metres where the views open out across Morecambe Bay.

What you get is a genuine sense of "did I really just move that rock?" which keeps kids entertained for longer than you'd expect. The views sweep across the bay towards the Lake District fells on clear days, though the real draw here is the rocks themselves rather than any scenic payoff. The crag's limestone faces are worth a look too if you're into that sort of thing.

Allow a solid hour to get up and back, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking it slowly or stopping to admire the balance of things. There's no visitor infrastructure - no café, no facilities - so bring water. It's free, obviously, and accessible year-round, though winter can make the paths boggy.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Wonderland Retreats or Bay View are closest at a mile or so - it's a decent morning walk that won't swallow your whole day. Worth combining with a proper ramble elsewhere in the area rather than making a dedicated trip. The novelty of moving rocks wears off quicker than the walk takes.
