About Warton Upper Crag

The walk up Warton Crag takes about twenty minutes from the car park near Carnforth, and it's steep enough to get your heart going but short enough that you won't regret it halfway up. The views from the top are genuinely worth the climb - you get proper fell scenery across Morecambe Bay, with the Lake District fells visible on clear days. It's limestone country, so the rock underfoot is rough and the vegetation changes as you climb.

This is very much a walker's spot rather than somewhere you'd hang about for hours. An hour total, give or take, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the summit. The views pull in experienced hikers and casual ramblers alike, though young children might find the steep sections tricky. If you're staying at any of the nearby parks - Wonderland Retreats is barely a mile away, and Bay View Holiday Park even closer - it's an excellent evening walk before dinner.

There's a trig point and an old fortification up there if you're into that sort of archaeology. The real draw, though, is the vantage point itself. On a grey Lancashire day it's moody; when the weather's kind, you can see why people settle around these parts. Free to access, no facilities at the top, so bring water. Best visited outside peak summer if you can manage it - the paths get worn and muddy come July.
