Warwickshire Golf and Country Club

An 18-hole championship course just outside Warwick, this is proper golf territory if you're staying in the area and fancy a round. The layout winds through parkland, which means you get decent views alongside your scorecard - not just fairway after fairway. It's the kind of place where golfers actually want to spend a full day rather than dash round in under three hours.

You'll need to be a member or have an introduction from one to play, which is typical for clubs of this calibre in the Midlands. If you're self-catering at one of the nearby parks - Warwick Racecourse Caravan Club is barely 2.5 miles away - it's worth ringing ahead to see what their visitor policy is. Some clubs are stricter than others.

Non-golfers won't find much here, to be honest. There's no visitor centre or café culture like you'd get at a public course. It's functional rather than a destination in itself. But if you're a competent golfer and you've landed a few days around Warwick with Warwick Castle and the town centre to explore, this breaks up the sightseeing nicely.

Allow a full day if you play - four to five hours on the course plus time beforehand to sort yourself out. Best to ring and book well ahead, especially at weekends. It's the sort of place that fills up quickly with members.
