Wayland Wood

The woodland path at Wayland Wood winds through a proper slice of Norfolk's natural heritage, just outside Attleborough. This Norfolk Wildlife Trust reserve feels older than it probably is - ancient woodland, they say, though parts have been replanted over the years. You get Scots pines and broadleaf trees in equal measure, with the forest floor thick enough to muffle your footsteps.

It's brilliant for a quiet morning walk rather than a destination that'll keep you entertained for hours. Most visitors do the circuit in 45 minutes to an hour. The paths are well-maintained but can be boggy after rain - proper waterproofs essential. Birdwatchers will have a field day here; the reserve's known for nuthatches and woodpeckers if you're patient and quiet enough.

Families with younger kids might find it a touch dull without a specific mission - there's no playground or visitor centre, just trees and birdsong. Older children who enjoy spotting wildlife or identifying plants will get more from it. The admission's free, which is always welcome.
