Weacombe Hill

The walk up Weacombe Hill from Holford is steep enough to make you work for it, but the Somerset countryside rewards the effort. You're climbing through proper woodland at first, then the trees thin out and suddenly you've got views across the Quantock Hills that stretch for miles. The summit itself is modest - nothing dramatic, just grass and the sense of having earned your vantage point.

This is walker territory, pure and simple. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Moorhouse Campsite or Haven Doniford Bay, it makes a solid half-day outing. The climb takes maybe 45 minutes depending on fitness, and you'll want another 30 minutes to sit about at the top and actually look at where you are. Families with decent stamina will manage it; very small children might struggle with the gradient.

What you get is honest Somerset landscape - no visitor centre, no café, no faffing about. Just hillside and views and the occasional breeze that reminds you why you bothered. Timing matters: early morning or late afternoon when the light's decent will feel less like a trudge and more like the point of the exercise. Midday heat can be brutal on exposed sections.

From your campsite base, it's a straightforward route and ticks the box if you want to move around properly without driving. The Quantocks themselves are good walking country generally, so combining this with other local trails makes sense. It's not a destination in itself, but it's exactly what a working holiday in Somerset should include - a bit of effort, nice views, genuine air.
