Weeting Heath National Nature Reserve

The open heathland near Brandon stretches flat and brown under the Norfolk sky, dotted with low scrub and the occasional Scots pine. Weeting Heath is what remains of the vast heaths that once covered this part of East Anglia before farming took over - now it's a working nature reserve where stone curlews and nightjars breed in summer, and you've got a decent chance of spotting them if you time it right.

It's a walker's spot, really. There are trails threading through the reserve, and the beauty is in the scale of the space rather than dramatic views. You walk for miles without hitting a fence or a road, which in Norfolk feels like real freedom. Spring brings nesting birds and wildflowers; autumn is quieter and somehow more meditative. The reserve is open year-round, though summer evenings when the nightjars start calling are genuinely worth planning for.

All of this costs nothing - it's a National Nature Reserve run by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. You won't need more than two to three hours unless you're serious about birdwatching. Families with young children might find it a bit austere; there's no café, no facilities, just heath and birdsong.
