Weir Wood Reservoir

Water and woodland meet just outside East Grinstead at Weir Wood Reservoir, a sprawling lake that's ideal for anyone wanting to escape the Surrey crowds without venturing too far. It's a proper working reservoir - supplies drinking water to the region - but the banks have been developed into a pleasant spot for walking and watching wildlife.

The main draw is the circuit walk around the water. It takes a couple of hours at a leisurely pace, with decent views across the lake and into the surrounding forest. Birdwatchers will recognise it immediately - herons, grebes and various waterfowl are regular sightings. Bring binoculars and a bird book if you're that way inclined; if you're not, it's still a nice enough amble through forest paths with water constantly in view.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after the first forty minutes - it's lakeside walking rather than adventure - but keen walkers and photographers will get proper value from it. The woodland setting keeps things cool even on warmer days, which is a plus.

Access appears to be free, though it's worth checking locally in East Grinstead before you visit, as water company rules can shift. If you're camped at Hook Farm Campsite or any of the other sites within five miles, Weir Wood makes an easy half-day outing. Pack a coffee flask and take it slowly - there's no need to rush.
