Well Woods

Walk into Well Woods and you're immediately swallowed by tall conifers and the smell of damp earth. This forest sits just outside Haltwhistle, making it an obvious escape when you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Langley Dam or Panoramic Pods.

It's a proper woodland walk rather than a manicured park trail. You'll find yourself on forest paths that wind through dense tree cover, with the occasional opening onto rougher terrain. The woods feel genuinely wild in places - the kind of spot where you half expect to bump into something interesting round the next bend, though mostly you'll just encounter other walkers and the sound of your own footsteps on the leaf litter.

Family groups with kids aged eight and up will enjoy it most. Younger children might find the path a bit relentless without much to do at the end. There's no visitor centre or café, so come prepared. The lack of crowd management or obvious facilities means it stays refreshingly quiet even in decent weather.

Allow an hour for a decent loop, longer if you're wandering about looking for wildlife. It's free to access, which is always a bonus. The Hadrian's Wall heritage is nearby, so if you're doing a holiday circuit around Haltwhistle, this slots in nicely as a half-day activity rather than a main event. Go when it hasn't rained for a few days - the paths get muddy otherwise.
