Wells Wood, Open Access

You'll find Wells Wood just inland from Wells-next-the-Sea, a proper slice of Norfolk woodland that feels genuinely removed from the coast despite being minutes away. It's open access, which means you can wander through at your own pace without the rigmarole of gates and car parks.

The wood itself is modest compared to some of Norfolk's larger forests, but that's partly why it works. You get tall pines mixed with deciduous trees, decent footpaths that don't require hiking boots, and that particular quality of light filtering through the canopy that makes you slow down whether you mean to or not. It's the sort of place where you notice things - birds, the smell after rain, how the ground changes beneath your feet.

Walkers get the most from it, particularly those already staying at Pinewoods Holiday Park just 0.6 miles away - genuinely worth combining the two. You could easily spend an hour here without feeling rushed, though fifteen minutes is fine if you're just ducking in from the coast. Families with younger children might find it a bit limited unless they're proper nature enthusiasts; there's not much in the way of drama or facilities.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn are when the wood actually feels special rather than just serviceable. Winter's muddy but atmospheric. Summer can feel a bit claustrophobic when the foliage's full.

It pairs well with a broader Norfolk coast holiday - use it as a gentle counterpoint to beach walking and the town itself. The Norfolk Brickyard and Deepdale Camping are both within reasonable driving distance if you're base-hopping.
