Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway

Steam whistles still echo across the Powys countryside along this narrow-gauge railway, which has been chugging between Welshpool and Llanfair since 1972. The line itself is a survivor - originally built in 1903 to haul slate and sheep, it nearly vanished altogether before enthusiasts brought it back to life. Nowadays you're climbing into vintage carriages pulled by restored locomotives, rattling through eight miles of Welsh hill country with views that properly justify the journey.

It's the sort of thing that works brilliantly for families - kids get genuinely excited by the whole steam-and-whistle business, and the relaxed pace means you can actually see the landscape rolling past rather than blur past a motorway window. Adults who remember proper branch-line railways will find themselves getting unexpectedly emotional about it. You're looking at a couple of hours minimum for the round trip, maybe more if you fancy a proper stop at Llanfair itself.

The railway runs seasonally and weekends year-round, so check ahead - it's not the sort of place that's operating full tilt in January. Admission isn't free, but it's reasonable enough. If you're staying at any of the glamping spots nearby - The Secret Yurts is barely over a mile away, or Oaklands with its treehouses is even closer - it slots perfectly into a holiday that's all about slowing down. Welshpool itself is worth a poke around too, proper market town with actual character.
