Wem Baptist Church

The red-brick Baptist Chapel on the high street in Wem is one of those churches you'd walk past without thinking twice - until you step inside. Built in 1836, it's a proper example of Victorian nonconformist architecture, all clean lines and honest materials without the fussy decoration you'd find in the parish church. The interior is austere but striking: simple wooden pews, a gallery running around three sides, and plain glass windows that let decent light flood through.

Wem itself is a small market town east of Shrewsbury, and the Baptist Church sits right in the heart of things, making it easy to slot into a wander around the high street. History types will appreciate what it represents - the rise of Baptist congregations in the 18th and 19th centuries when they were pushing back against the established church. The building's been well maintained, and someone clearly cares about it.

Access can be a bit hit-or-miss; it's not staffed like a tourist attraction, so you'll need to catch an opening time or ask locally. Worth ringing ahead if you're planning a specific visit. The walk round from Lower Lacon Caravan Park takes about twenty minutes, making it an easy addition to a park stay.
