Wenchford - Forestry England

Wenchford is a proper working forestry site run by Forestry England, tucked into the dense woodland just outside Lydney in Gloucestershire. You're looking at managed forest rather than a manicured tourist attraction - rows of conifers, forest tracks, and the kind of quiet that comes when you're surrounded by hundreds of acres of trees.

What draws most people here are the walking trails that thread through the woodland. There's nothing flashy about it. You won't find a visitor centre or a gift shop. What you get instead is access to decent forest paths, some more challenging than others, and genuine peace and quiet. It's the sort of place where you'll actually hear birdsong rather than other visitors chattering.

This works best for walkers who want a proper leg-stretch without the crowds, and families with older kids who won't need constant entertainment. Younger children might find it a bit samey after an hour. Admission is free, as you'd expect from a Forestry England site, though you should allow a couple of hours minimum to make the journey worthwhile.

If you're camping at Deanwood or Whitemead Forest Park nearby - both within a couple of miles - Wenchford makes an easy morning or afternoon outing. It pairs well with the wider Forest of Dean area, giving you proper woodland walking without venturing into the busier, more touristy sections. Bring proper footwear though. The forest floor gets boggy.
