Wentwood Reservoir

The water sits perfectly still most days, a sheet of grey-blue that reflects whatever sky's above it. Wentwood Reservoir, just north of Chepstow, is the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - a proper working reservoir that's become a decent spot for a walk without the crowds you'd find at more famous Welsh lakes.

There's a path around the perimeter that takes a fair hour or so depending on your pace. It's not dramatic scenery - no mountains looming overhead - but there's something quietly satisfying about the water, the woodland fringing it, and the occasional heron if you're lucky. Walkers get the most from it. Families with younger kids might find it a bit limited unless they're genuinely keen on a straightforward circuit walk. The banks are accessible enough, though it can get muddy after rain.

I'd allow two hours if you're doing the full loop at a gentle pace, including time to just stand and look. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching - you'll see more that way. The reservoir is free to access, which is always a bonus.

If you're based at Penhein Glamping nearby, it makes a solid morning or afternoon outing before heading elsewhere. It won't blow your mind, but it's the sort of local spot that reminds you why people actually live in Wales rather than just visit. Honest and unshowy.
