West Kennet Long Barrow

The walk across the Wiltshire downs to West Kennet Long Barrow is half the experience. You're heading towards something genuinely old - we're talking 3,650 BC, give or take a few centuries. This isn't a visitor centre with a gift shop. It's a proper Neolithic tomb, a passage grave really, where you can actually walk inside the stone chambers where people were buried five thousand years ago.

The barrow itself is massive - about 100 metres long, with a forecourt at one end and a series of burial chambers running back into the mound. You can descend into the passage and see the sarsen stones that have been there since before the Egyptians built pyramids. It's atmospheric without being spooky, though on a grey afternoon it does feel properly ancient.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this - it's a genuinely significant archaeological site, not just tourist theatre. Kids often find the walk across the downs more interesting than the tomb itself, honestly. Allow two hours including the walk from the road. The site's free and accessible year-round, though wet weather makes the surrounding fields muddy as anything.

If you're camping at Ridgeway Campsite just 1.4 miles away, or any of the other spots nearby, this works brilliantly as a morning or evening outing. The landscape around Marlborough is thick with prehistoric monuments - this doesn't stand alone. Worth the detour if you're into archaeology, less essential if you want Instagram moments.
