West Pennine Moors

The West Pennine Moors sprawl across Lancashire like someone's thrown a proper wild blanket over the hills - moorland, forestry, and valleys all tangled together in a way that actually works. You're looking at open moorland mixed with coniferous woodland, threading through from Bury across toward Bolton. The walking here is genuinely good: trails wind through forest, over heathland, past reservoirs. It's not dramatic stuff, but it's solid territory where you can spend a half-day or a full one without complaint.

Walkers get the most from this. The moors attract serious hikers tackling longer routes, but equally you can knock out a two-hour ramble and call it done. Families with older kids will find the tracks manageable; younger ones might find stretches a bit exposed and windswept when the weather turns. History types will spot evidence of the old moorland economy - stone walls, old workings - though it's not a museum experience.

Free to access. You can park at various points and pay for car parking, or use nearby bases. Staying at Dearden Wood, just 4.7 miles away, or the well-reviewed Burrs Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite (5 miles), puts you right on the edge. The moors work best in summer and early autumn when visibility is decent; winter can mean heavy cloud and mud. Allow three hours minimum, longer if you're serious about distance. It's proper Pennine landscape - not Instagram-friendly necessarily, but the kind of place that clarifies your head after a day or two.
