West Wood

West Wood sits just outside Chesham, a proper chunk of ancient woodland that feels a world away from the town itself. You're looking at mixed deciduous forest - beech, oak, ash - with a decent network of walking trails that range from gentle loops to longer stomps through the interior. The canopy's thick enough that even on hot days it stays cool and damp underfoot, which is either refreshing or a bit gloomy depending on your mood and the weather.

This is walker territory, full stop. Families with young kids might find it a touch disappointing if they're expecting dramatic viewpoints or facilities - there's not much in the way of infrastructure. That said, if your children are happy scrambling over fallen logs and spotting birds, they'll get hours out of it. The woodland floor is uneven in places, so proper shoes beat trainers.

No entrance fee, which is the good news. Allow at least two hours for a proper explore, though you can do a quick 45-minute circuit if you're pressed. Autumn's when it earns its keep - the beech turns copper and gold, and the whole place feels properly magical. Winter's OK too, less muddy than you'd think. Spring can be wet.

It works well as a morning's activity if you're staying at Lights Camera Glamping nearby - gives you something to do before settling into the lounging-around-the-fire part of a weekend away. Not a headline attraction, but genuine woodland peace without the tourist crowds.
