Wester Flints Plantation

A proper woodland walk just outside Dunfermline, Wester Flints Plantation is the sort of place locals know well but visitors often miss. It's a conifer forest - predominantly Scots pine and spruce - with a network of paths that wind through quiet glades and emerge onto ridges with decent views across Fife.

The woodland itself is straightforward stuff. No visitor centre, no cafes, no marked trails with colour-coded posts. You just turn up and walk. The forest floor is soft underfoot even after rain, and the air has that lovely sharp pine scent you only get in proper plantations. On a clear day you can see across the valley towards the Ochil Hills. The beauty here is the simplicity of it - come in autumn and the light through the trees is absolutely worth the trip alone.

It works best for walkers after a bit of breathing room. Families with young kids might find it short on thrills - there's no play area, no water features - though if they're happy tramping through trees for an hour it's ideal. Bring proper boots; the paths get boggy in places. Allow one and a half to two hours for a circular walk.
