Wester Hill

The walk up Wester Hill from Coldstream takes about ninety minutes if you're reasonably fit, and the Scottish Borders landscape spreads out below you in a way that makes the climb worthwhile. It's not dramatic or alpine - this is rolling moorland and farmland, not craggy peaks - but that's rather the point. You get proper views across the Tweed Valley without the crowds you'd find further north.

The hill itself is modest in height but the openness appeals to walkers who want distance without technical difficulty. Families with older kids do well here; the younger ones might find it a bit relentless. The paths are decent enough, though it can get boggy after rain, which is often in these parts.

There's no visitor centre or facilities on the hill itself - bring water and a snack. Free to access, naturally. Go on a clear day if you possibly can; cloud rolls in fast around here and you'll see nothing but grey.

If you're staying at Coldstream Holiday Park, just four miles away, this makes an excellent morning outing. It fits well with other Border walks in the area without being a full-day commitment. The town of Coldstream itself is worth a wander afterwards - proper small-town charm with decent shops and cafes. Worth doing if you're in the region, but don't divert specially for it.
