Westmill

The remains at Westmill are what archaeologists call a Roman temporary camp - basically the footprint of where legionaries pitched tents during the first-century push through Scotland. There's not much to see on the ground itself; no standing stones or dramatic ruins. What you're looking at is a series of defensive ditches and earthworks that have survived because the site was never built over. For people who find Roman history genuinely interesting, it's worth a detour from Auchterarder, about half an hour's walk through farmland. The landscape tells the story more than the site does - you can see why the Romans chose this spot, the sight lines, the defensibility. Casual tourists will probably find it underwhelming, to be honest. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards that I could find, so you need to arrive with some historical knowledge or armed with a good guide app. Walkers and archaeology enthusiasts will get the most from it, particularly those interested in Roman military movements across Britain. It's the kind of place that works best as part of a wider journey - combine it with stronger Roman sites elsewhere, or use it to break up a longer hike. The nearby parks at Alexander House and Greenhill Farm put you in the right area for exploring Perthshire's deeper history.
