Whams Woods

The woodland floor at Whams Woods is soft underfoot, carpeted with moss and leaf litter that's been accumulating for centuries. This is proper Lancashire countryside, just outside Garstang, where ancient trees create a canopy that keeps things cool and damp even on warmer days.

It's a forest walk rather than a managed visitor attraction, which means no visitor centre, no café, no entry fees - just you, the trees, and whatever wildlife you're lucky enough to spot. The paths wind through mixed woodland, and it's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Not dramatically scenic in the postcard sense, but genuinely restorative. Allow a couple of hours to meander without rushing.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's gentle enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find it a bit samey after the first twenty minutes. Serious hikers could loop it into a longer day combining other walks in the area. The paths aren't signed to death, so bringing a map is sensible rather than optional.

If you're staying at Mill House Farm Pods or Moss Rose Camping - both outstanding sites nearby - Whams Woods makes an excellent morning or late-afternoon outing. It's not the kind of place you drive an hour for specifically, but it's absolutely worth the detour if you're in the Garstang area. Best in spring when the woodland floor comes alive, or autumn when the light filters through the thinning canopy.
