Wheal Butson

Wheal Butson is a working tin mine museum near Goonbell that gives you a proper sense of what Cornish mining life actually looked like. You descend into the engine house and working parts of the mine - it's genuinely atmospheric, with original machinery still in place and the kind of damp, echoing conditions that make you realise why mining was such brutal work. The museum does an excellent job explaining the extraction process without getting bogged down in technical jargon most visitors won't care about.

History enthusiasts will find this far more rewarding than the polished attractions. Families with kids aged eight and up tend to enjoy it, though younger children might struggle with the confined spaces and steep stairs. Allow a good hour if you're taking it slowly, half that if you just want to peek around. The setting itself - surrounded by old mining country and industrial remnants - is worth the trip even if you're not obsessed with heritage.

It works well as part of a wider mining history tour of the area. If you're staying at Wrinklers Wood or Trevarth, both within two miles, you could easily combine this with exploring other Cornish mining sites dotted around the landscape. Perran View is also close by. The surrounding countryside is pleasant for a walk after you've finished, though the attraction itself is quite compact.
