Whichford Pottery

The pottery workshop at Whichford sits just outside Shipston-on-Stour, and if you're staying anywhere in the Cotswolds, it's worth a detour. The whole operation - working studio and gallery combined - occupies a proper working space where you can actually watch potters throwing and firing clay. No polished museum vibe here; it's genuine makers doing their thing.

You'll see everything from functional tableware to decorative pieces, all made on site. The gallery displays finished work and there's usually stock available to buy if something catches your eye. Most visitors spend an hour browsing and chatting to the potters if they're not too busy. Kids get a bit more from it if they've done pottery themselves, though watching the wheels turn keeps most entertained for twenty minutes or so.

It's free to look around, though obviously they hope you'll buy something. Check ahead for opening times as studio hours can be variable - artisan workshops aren't always open bank holidays, for instance. The nearby Cotswold Hills Country Park and Aylesmore Farm make decent bases if you're planning a longer stay in the area, putting you within easy reach of both this and the broader Cotswolds attractions around Shipston.

The location itself is lovely - rolling countryside, no crowds. Go on a weekday morning if you want to see actual work happening rather than arriving to find everyone at lunch. Proper little spot if you like supporting working craftspeople.
