Whinny Bank

The woodland around Whinly Bank delivers proper walking country without the crowds you'd find further north in the Lake District. It's a straightforward forest patch near Northallerton that works best if you're already staying at one of the nearby parks - Whorlton Pods or Cote Ghyll - rather than driving out specially. Dense enough to feel like you've stepped away from things, open enough that you won't feel claustrophobic.

What you actually get is a decent network of paths through mixed woodland. The sort of place where you might spot deer if you're quiet, where the ground stays boggy enough in places to remind you this is proper Yorkshire moorland edge. No visitor centre, no facilities, no fees - you just turn up and walk. Most people spend an hour to ninety minutes here, depending on how thoroughly you want to pick through the trees.

Families with kids aged seven upwards will enjoy it; younger ones might find it a bit samey after half an hour. Serious hikers would be better served by the longer moorland walks nearby. Dog walkers love it - miles of lead-friendly paths and proper muddy patches to get that post-walk shower justified.

The real value is how it slots into a longer day. Hit Whinly Bank in the afternoon, then base yourselves at either Whorlton Pods - which are genuinely lovely - or Cote Ghyll if you want something more traditional. You're close enough to Northallerton for a proper meal without it being a schlep. Not spectacular, but genuinely worth the diversion if you're spending a few nights in the area.
