White Hill

The walk up White Hill rewards you with views that stretch across the Southern Uplands - on a clear day you can see right across to the Lake District. It's a proper hill rather than a mountain, so don't expect anything intimidating, but the effort feels worthwhile once you reach the summit.

Getting there from Biggar takes about twenty minutes by car, and the ascent itself is manageable for most walkers. You'll find a decent trail that doesn't require scrambling or technical gear, making it suitable for families with older kids and anyone after a straightforward hill walk without the commitment of something like Ben Lomond. Allow a couple of hours to get up and back down comfortably.

The Lowlands can surprise you with their scale from up here. It's not dramatic terrain - no exposed ridges or knife-edge paths - but there's real satisfaction in the panorama once you've done the graft. The surrounding moorland and forestry plantations give it a wild enough feel despite being relatively accessible.

If you're staying at Mount View Caravan Park just down the road, this makes an excellent half-day outing that doesn't eat into your whole schedule. The facilities at Mount View are solid, so you can base yourself there and tackle White Hill without worrying about rushing back. Weather matters here like everywhere in Scotland - come on a grey day and you'll see clouds; wait for decent visibility and it genuinely pays off.
