About Whitebeam Woods

You'll find yourself in proper Sussex woodland once you push through the entrance to Whitebeam Woods - the sort of place where the canopy gets thick enough that you forget Worthing's just down the road. It's a small nature reserve, not a sprawling country estate, so don't come expecting hours of wandering. What you get instead is a genuine bit of local ecology: woodland management done right, with paths that show you how the trees and undergrowth actually work together.

The whitebeam trees themselves are the draw - they're not common, and the reserve exists partly to protect them. You'll see native species thriving here, and on a decent day the light filters through in that particular way that makes you understand why people bother with nature reserves at all. It's quiet, which is half the charm. Walkers who want a gentle hour away from the seafront will appreciate it far more than families after a full day out - there's not a playground in sight, and restless kids will manage maybe forty minutes before asking what's for lunch.

Free access, no car park fees that I'm aware of, though facilities are minimal. Check locally before you go - opening hours aren't always publicised. Stay at Onslow or Brook Lane Caravan Parks (both under two miles away) and you've got a proper woodland break on your doorstep without having to drive far. South Downs Caravan Park, six miles north, offers better facilities if you want more comfort, though you'll lose the coastal proximity.
