Whitfield Fell

The walk up Whitfield Fell rewards you with proper Wensleydale views - Yorkshire moorland at its most honest. It's not dramatic or showy, just a solid fell with enough height to make the effort worthwhile and enough space to breathe once you're up there.

From Leyburn, you can reach it in under an hour's drive, making it a decent half-day outing. The ascent itself is straightforward rather than punishing. You'll gain height steadily through moorland dotted with juniper and bilberry, the path well-trodden but never crowded even on decent weekends. At the top, the vista opens across the valley toward Hawes and beyond - if visibility's good, you can pick out landmarks for miles. On a grey day it's atmospheric; on a clear one, genuinely lovely.

Walkers and fell runners get the most from this. Families with older kids will manage fine, though younger ones might find the exposure a bit dull without the dramatic drops you get elsewhere. There's no cafe at the summit or visitor facilities - bring what you need. Allow two to three hours for a round trip from the car park.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Usha Gap Farm or Stablefell are closest - Whitfield Fell works well as a morning walk before heading down to Hawes or Wensleydale proper. It's the sort of fell that doesn't make the postcards but absolutely justifies the boots.
