Whitley Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Gloucester, Whitley Wood gives you that sense of actually being somewhere wild without needing to drive for hours. The trees are dense enough that you forget the city's behind you, and there's a decent network of paths threading through - some muddy, some better maintained, depending on the season and how recently anyone's been through with a cutter.

It's the sort of place that works well for families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground without constant hand-holding. You're looking at an hour to ninety minutes for a decent loop without rushing. Dog walkers clearly know about it - you'll see others on weekends. History buffs won't find much of note here; this is straightforward nature rather than anything dramatic.

The woodland isn't dramatic in the Instagram sense. No waterfall reveal, no sudden vista. But if you want to stretch your legs between town visits or you're based at nearby Pepper Pot Caravan Park and fancy a break from the campsite, it does the job. Spring's when it's nicest - the canopy hasn't fully closed in yet and you get some light on the forest floor. Winter can be grim underfoot.

Free to access, as far as I can tell, and no obvious visitor infrastructure means come prepared with decent shoes and a map. It's the kind of place that rewards a quiet afternoon rather than demanding your whole day.
