Whitmore Wood

There's a proper woodland walk waiting for you just outside Stafford, and Whitmore Wood delivers exactly what it promises - ancient trees, dappled light, and paths that actually go somewhere interesting. This isn't a manicured country estate or a forestry plantation; it's a genuine chunk of old England's broadleaf woodland, the kind of place where you'll spot ferns unfurling and hear things rustling about in the undergrowth.

Walkers will love it most. The paths are well-trodden and reasonably navigable, though it can get muddy after rain - proper boots recommended. You're looking at anything from a quick 45-minute stroll to a more substantial two-hour ramble depending on which routes you fancy. Families with older kids (seven upwards) will find it engaging; younger ones might lose interest unless they're mad about spotting wildlife.

The trees are the real draw here. Oak, beech, and birch create a canopy that keeps things cool even in summer. Spring is genuinely lovely - bluebells carpet sections of the forest - and autumn colours are decent if you time it right. Winter visits work too, though the paths can be slippery.

If you're staying at Fledgling Farm or basing yourself around Stafford, this makes a solid morning or afternoon outing. It won't take all day, but it's the kind of stop that reminds you why Staffordshire's countryside deserves a proper look. Bring a packed lunch if you want; there's nowhere to eat on site that I'm aware of. Free access as far as I can tell, which makes it even better value.
