Wickham Recreation Ground

A proper sprawl of woodland and open ground just outside Fareham, Wickham Recreation Ground is the sort of place locals know well but visitors often miss. It's got everything you'd want from a nature reserve without the theatrics - mature trees, open meadows, and enough paths to keep you wandering for a good couple of hours without feeling like you're going in circles.

The walking here is genuinely pleasant. You can take it easy on well-maintained trails or push into the quieter bits if you fancy something with a bit more peace and quiet. Birdwatchers tend to do well, and there's enough variety of habitat that you'll spot different things depending on when you visit. Spring brings the usual suspects, but summer's when the place really fills out.

Kids won't be bored, but they'll get more out of it if they're the type to notice things rather than needing a visitor centre and a cafe. There's room to run about, which counts for something. The ground can get waterlogged after rain, so check conditions before you drag the family out.

If you're camped at Rookesbury Park or ScottsHaven - both within a few miles - this is an obvious morning or afternoon slot. It fills a gap nicely between a proper country walk and something you can knock off quickly. No facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. Free to access, which is always welcome.
