The woodland around Willesley comes as a proper surprise if you're staying in the Swadlincote area. It's not some grand estate or manicured parkland - just a genuine stretch of old English woodland where you can actually walk without bumping into crowds or gift shops.

What you get is a network of paths winding through mixed woodland, the kind of place where you'll spot bluebells in spring and hear nothing but birds and the occasional rustle of deer. The trees are mature and varied enough to feel like you've actually stepped away from things, even though you're minutes from town. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which means it stays proper quiet.

This is walker territory, frankly. Families with young kids might manage a short loop, but if you're after a proper stomp through the woods with time to breathe, Willesley delivers. History buffs will be mildly interested - there's been settlement here for centuries - but don't come expecting plaques or interpretation boards.

Free access, no set hours, and you can potter about for as long as you fancy. Combine it with a stay at Fire & Stars Woodland Camping just down the road - the proximity is ideal if you want morning walks without the faff of driving. New Forest View Caravan Site is also close enough that woodland rambles fit neatly into a broader park holiday. Allow an hour or two depending on how thoroughly you want to explore the paths. Best visited in dry weather when the ground's firm underfoot.
