You get a proper sense of what made this place tick - from Saxon times through to the Georgian era - without the crowds you'd find at bigger attractions. The Roman finds are decent, and there's enough on the medieval period to keep history types engaged, though the layout can feel a bit cramped if you're expecting grand galleries.

It works best for families with older kids and anyone genuinely interested in local history. Younger children might lose interest after forty minutes or so, but if you're camping at Holden Farm or Hookpit Farm nearby, it's a sensible wet-weather option or a quiet morning before heading out to walk. The town itself is worth a wander - the cathedral's a proper sight - so you can combine the museum with a bit of exploring without making it the centrepiece of your park holiday.
