Winfrith Heath Nature Reserve

Heathland stretches for miles here, dotted with gorse bushes that blaze yellow in spring and smell of coconut when the sun hits them. This former Ministry of Defence site has been left to nature since the 1990s, creating one of Dorset's most important lowland heath habitats.

Rare birds like the Dartford warbler and stonechat make their homes among the scrubland, while adders bask on sandy paths during warmer months. The network of tracks makes for easy walking, though wellies are wise after rain as the ground stays boggy in places. Sand lizards scurry between the heather if you're sharp-eyed enough to spot them.

Families will find it properly wild rather than manicured - no visitor centre or facilities, just raw countryside that feels miles from anywhere despite being close to Dorchester. Kids who like hunting for wildlife will be in their element, though toddlers might find the uneven paths heavy going.

Allow two hours for a decent wander, longer if you're serious about birdwatching. Early morning visits in spring and summer offer the best chance of hearing nightjars churring at dusk. The reserve works well as a contrast to busier Dorset attractions, and with holiday parks like Warmwell and Sandyholme within a few miles, it's an easy addition to a week exploring this corner of the county.
