Wokefield Common Nature Reserve

Wokefield Common sits just outside Reading - a proper working nature reserve that doesn't feel overcooked or fenced-off like some of them do. You get heathland, woodland, and open grassland all within walking distance, which means the light changes completely depending on which bit you're in.

It's ideal for walkers and anyone actually interested in wildlife rather than just Instagram backdrops. The birdwatching here is legitimate - you'll spot skylarks, woodpeckers, and if you're lucky, nightjars in summer. There are marked trails, though they're not marked as heavily as you'd get at the big country estates, which is rather the point.

Allow a couple of hours to do the main circuits properly. It's free to access, and there's usually somewhere to park nearby without much fuss. Spring and early summer are when it's most lively - the place transforms once the vegetation kicks in and the birds arrive.

Fitting it into a park holiday works well if you're staying at Wellington Country Park or Ravenswing Park. Both are close enough that you could easily combine a morning here with an afternoon at one of the parks. The reserve scratches that "get outside and actually see something" itch, whereas the parks are better for facilities and activities. Together they give you proper nature without the slightly sterile feeling of big attractions.
