Woolfly Wood

A proper Sussex woodland that doesn't demand anything of you - no ticket booth, no visitor centre, just trees and the occasional shaft of light cutting through the canopy. Woolfly Wood sits quietly near Henfield, the sort of place locals know and outsiders stumble upon by accident.

What you get is straightforward: mature woodland with decent walking potential, enough paths to keep you from retracing your steps, and the kind of peace that makes you remember why forests matter. Spring brings bluebells worth the detour; autumn's leaf fall is genuinely lovely. It's not dramatic - no ancient monuments or rare species signposted at every turn - but that's rather the point. This is woodland for being in, not for ticking off.

Families with young kids will manage fine on the main paths, though it's not a manicured experience. Proper walkers appreciate the quietness. Birdwatchers find it productive without the crowds you'd get at a managed nature reserve. Allow an hour minimum, two if you're the sort who actually looks at things.

The free access (standard for open woodland) makes it an excellent slot in a Sussex park holiday. Honeybridge Park and Knepp Wildland Safaris are both within striking distance, so you could easily combine a stay at either with a morning or afternoon walk here. It's low-key enough to fit between bigger attractions, substantial enough to justify the petrol. Bring decent boots if it's been wet - the ground holds moisture like you wouldn't believe.
